Chiropractic care is hands-on treatment appreciated by many for its non-pharmacologic and non-surgical foundation. In a healthcare system that is structured for the inclusion of non-pharmacologic treatment modalities incorporating chiropractic – the Veteran’s Healthcare Administrationusual medical care plus chiropractic care for patients with low back pain was documented as being beneficial. There was a significant difference in the results of usual medical care compared with usual medical care plus chiropractic care in better quality of life scoring as well as pain-related disability with chiropractic care. (1) In the Medicare system, older beneficiaries with spinal pain who utilized chiropractic care were at significantly lower risk – 56% lower – of filling an opioid prescription. (2) Since 2011, a novel role to manage spine-related pain, back pain, radiculopathy, etc., was proposed, the Primary Spine Practitioner. Integrating such care into the healthcare system is aimed to improve effectiveness and value of care because high costs and poor outcomes are common in spine care. Aurora Chiropractic Center presents a new study highlighting the benefit of adding at-home exercise to in-office treatment for neck pain relief.

Juneau CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH:  ADD AT-HOME EXERCISE

Blending efforts, whether it is it between your healthcare providers or between your at-home care and your in-office treatment, is important. In looking for relief of back pain or neck pain, mixing treatment at the office with exercise at home is beneficial. The latest report of such a combination found that four 20-minute sessions of manual therapy and exercise plus an at-home exercise program was more effective than without manual therapy for neck pain sufferers. The patients’ range of motion got better as did their neck disability and pain intensity. (4) Juneau back pain and neck pain patients report additional benefit when they are involved in their care.
