Both Easy and Beneficial to Raise Vitamin D Levels

April 03, 2018

It’s a world-wide epidemic: vitamin D deficiency. 14% of the world population has poor vitamin D levels. (1) One study reports that it affects 1 billion of us worldwide. (2) Low vitamin D status is linked to a varied range of diseases. Bettering vitamin D levels is beneficial and easy…if vitamin D supplementation is followed. Aurora Chiropractic Center encourages our Juneau chiropractic patients to check and work to raise as necessary their vitamin D levels. Aurora Chiropractic Center is certain that positive health benefits will result from this effort.

DISEASES RELATED TO LOW VITAMIN D LEVELS

A widespread vitamin D deficiency is associated with many diseases. The incidence of cancers like breast, colorectal, kidney, lung, and pancreatic is related to low vitamin D levels. Diabetes, rickets, rheumatic arthritis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer diseases, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, osteomalacia, osteoporosis, and fractures in adults are too. (1, 2, 3) Vitamin D participates importantly in calcium homeostasis, skeletal metabolism, and the function of immune, cardiovascular and reproductive systems. (2) Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is also research-connected to vitamin D status and bone mineral density. (3) It responds well to vitamin D3 supplementation. Testing for the occurrence of osteopenia/osteoporosis in these patients is the test as to the effectiveness of the treatment. (4) Aurora Chiropractic Center notes that this is interesting as these two conditions are also identified as being affected by vitamin D status as well. Juneau chiropractic care at Aurora Chiropractic Center benefits Juneau chiropractic patients with these conditions.

BENEFITS OF IMPROVING VITAMIN D LEVELS

Supplementing those who take antidepressants with vitamin D is documented to improve the antidepressive effect. Researchers propose that vitamin D may be beneficial for other such conditions beyond just depression like schizophrenia, cognitive disturbances, attention deficit disorder, and autism. (1) Giving a daily equal dose of vitamin D (1000 units/kg I.P.) to post-surgical back patients on day one through day 21 alleviates symptoms of neuropathic pain. (5) Aurora Chiropractic Center acknowledges how these benefits are worth the effort our Juneau chiropractic patients would take on to elevate low vitamin D levels.

HOW TO RAISE VITAMIN D LEVELS

A study of healthy young women revealed that consuming calcium plus vitamin D (1500 IU) by those with less than 20ng/L or 800 IU of vitamin D by those with levels of greater than 20 ng/L. Both saw their vitamin D levels increase. The rise was seen in the first month of the study for those taking calcium plus vitamin D. A thought-provoking side finding in this study: It’s difficult to get people to do what is recommended! Only 67 of the 106 study women took the recommended supplements for the three months of the study! (6)
