Could a Plant Compound Assist Protect Your Spine Discs?

July 29, 2026

If you've ever dealt with disc-related back pain or neck pain, you realize how essential healthy spinal discs are to getting through your day through your day. Now, encouraging new research is exploring a natural compound called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to reduce the pace of disc degeneration at the cellular level.

WHAT IS QUERCETIN?

Quercetin is a botanical compound known as a flavonoid. It's already well-regarded for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but two studies published in 2026 took a closer look into how it may directly support the health of your spinal discs.

WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND

The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin helps protect nucleus pulposus cells — the soft, gel-like cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural shock absorbers. (1) Researchers determined that quercetin works by reducing a specific inflammatory pathway and boosting a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. Put simply, this supports disc cells in getting rid of worn-out components and functioning more efficiently, which may help postpone the degeneration process.

The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a unique view. (2) Using advanced genetic analysis, researchers determined that fibrosis — a kind of fibrous buildup — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a significant part in disc degeneration. They found that quercetin demonstrates potential as an antifibrotic agent, meaning it may help block this scarring process from progressing.

WHY THIS MATTERS TO OUR PATIENTS

While additional research is required before quercetin becomes a regular part of disc care, these findings contribute to a expanding body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can have a supportive role alongside gentle, non-surgical back care like chiropractic treatment. At Aurora Chiropractic Center, we believe in a holistic approach to spinal health — blending hands-on chiropractic care with lifestyle factors that support your body's natural healing.
