Juneau Chiropractic Care of Headache and Tips for Headache and Migraine Prevention
Headaches and migraines are never welcome. Headache sufferers are typically very ready for tips on how to avoid them. Migraine (a primary headache) sufferers over the age of 50 find themselves part of a global community with migraine as a leading cause of disability. (1) Aurora Chiropractic Center has some prevention tips and treatment relief suggestions just for our Juneau headache and migraine sufferers.
DIET AND WEIGHT
A healthy diet nourishes the body and the mind. Researchers have noted that migraine triggers appear in a variety of forms - environmental, hormonal, and dietary. A high-quality diet effectively helps handle migraine. Further, and more specifically, women with chronic migraine consumed a poorer quality diet than that of women with episodic migraine. (2) Another study got even more specific with the type of diet helpful to migraine patients, specifically those who are overweight. A very low-calorie ketogenic diet was found to be episodic-migraine preventative. Usefulness was noted within one month of the diet change. (3) Aurora Chiropractic Center is not recommending that any of our patients start a certain type of diet now! If a Juneau headache sufferer wishes to explore a new diet, Aurora Chiropractic Center is here to talk and decide which diet (if any special one) is appropriate.
NUTRITION: Vitamin D
The same goes for vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin D deficiency has been reported in 45% to 100% of migraine sufferers. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant features of vitamin D have initiated a look at including it in the care and prevention of headache and migraine. One study reported that trial doses of 1000-4000 IU per day decreased the frequency of migraine in addition to routine drug therapy. More study needs to be done, but vitamin D supplementation appears encouraging. (1) Aurora Chiropractic Center studies the nutrition of each individual Juneau chiropractic patient and recommends supplementation when appropriate.
CHIROPRACTIC AND INTEGRATIVE CARE
Headaches of all types – primary headaches like migraine and tension-type headache – are frequent complaints brought to the Juneau chiropractor. Research reported that complementary and integrative medicine - nutrition, movement (yoga), manual therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage, biofeedback, meditation, and mind-body strategies – was beneficial. In particular, spinal manipulation, chiropractic care, some supplements, diet change and hydrotherapy are reported helpful for migraine headache. (4)
