Juneau Knee Osteoarthritis and Quality of Life with a Mediterranean Diet

January 08, 2019

What do creaky, popping, cracking knees and olive oil, fruits, veggies and red wine have in common? Knee osteoarthritis! Juneau knee pain sufferers undergo the morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that is part of waking up and moving. Aurora Chiropractic Center hears our Juneau chiropractic patients describe this all the time. Those Juneau knee pain sufferers would be pleased to get some relief. What’s one approach? The Mediterranean diet that requires, of all things, eating. Aurora Chiropractic Center wonders “How hard can eating be for Juneau knee pain relief?”

Juneau OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN

Juneau knee osteoarthritis is common. There are many Juneau knee pain sufferers. They’re not alone! 240 million people around the world live with osteoarthritis. That affects about 10% of men and 18% of women. (1) Any Juneau knee osteoarthritis sufferer knows about the knee pain, the morning stiffness, and the creaky joint motion that lessens the quality of daily life. (1) It is just not very fun. Now a Mediterranean diet could be some fun though!

WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

The Mediterranean diet incorporates plenty of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish. The Mediterranean diet allows for moderate consumption of dairy, poultry and eggs as well as red wine and olive oil as the chief source of dietary lipids. (1) Yum! Eating a Mediterranean diet can be very tasty as well as adventurous for a recent Mediterranean diet follower.

BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Knee osteoarthritis involves inflammation as well as pain. An analysis of 3 studies points out that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation because of osteoarthritis decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Specifically, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who stuck to a Mediterranean diet have lessened risk of deteriorating knee pain at four years follow up. For those who didn’t experience knee osteoarthritis at the beginning of the 4 years project and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% lowered risk of getting knee osteoarthritis was reported. (3) Overall, a higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet is affiliated with better quality of life and decreased pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
