Neck Pain Relief That Starts Beyond Your Neck

October 13, 2026

If you've dealt with neck pain for a long time, you've most likely tried stretching it, rubbing it, and resting it. But here's a fact that you might not expect: some of the most useful exercises for a sore neck work on its surrounding regions instead. Your neck operates as part of a team that includes your jaw above and your upper back below, and two recent studies published in 2026 reveal why that cooperation matters.

YOUR JAW HAS A SAY

Researchers followed 62 adults who had experienced neck pain for more than three months. (1) Every participant did neck stabilization exercises for six weeks, and half also added Rocabado exercises, a short series of low-intensity movements for the jaw, tongue, and head posture. Both groups improved. The group that also did jaw exercises, however, saw bigger gains in how much pressure their neck could withstand before pain set in, in their ability to sense their head position, and in their balance. Since the jaw and neck share muscles and nerve pathways, it makes sense that supporting one can benefit the other.

YOUR UPPER BACK HELPS OUT

A related study of 54 adults added thoracic (mid- and upper-back) mobility exercises to standard neck exercises. (2) The added routine didn't relieve pain more than neck exercises alone, but it did produce better posture, spinal mobility, neck-related function, and use of the arms and shoulders. A stiff upper back may leave your neck doing extra work, so freeing up it could help everything above move more easily.

WHY THIS MATTERS TO YOU

These were small, brief studies, and in each study, the extra exercises were combined with neck exercises rather than taking the place of them. Even so, they're a good reminder that the root of your pain and the path to comfort aren't always in the same spot.
