Chiropractic Aftercare 101: What to Do Between Sessions

September 15, 2026

Spinal manipulation works most successfully as part of a well-rounded self-care picture. A significant 2026 JAMA study found that joining spinal manipulation with clinician-supported self-management education led to clearly better results for acute back pain than manipulation alone, underscoring that what patients do between visits makes a difference just as much as what happens on the table. (1) At Aurora Chiropractic Center in Juneau, we want every patient to feel prepared about taking care of their spine before, between, and after each appointment.

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Arrive well-hydrated. Spinal discs rely on fluid to stay flexible, and research on the annulus fibrosus demonstrates that hydration time directly affects how the disc swells and responds to tension. (2) Drinking water steadily all day, not just right before your visit, gives your tissues a firmer foundation for treatment. Light movement ahead of time, such as a short stroll, can also help ease muscle tension so your body responds more readily to care.

BETWEEN SESSIONS

Rest plays a bigger role than most patients expect. A study of 101 healthy volunteers reported that cervical and thoracic disc hydration in fact increases with recumbency, meaning just lying down allows the spine to rehydrate and recover. (3) Prioritizing a good night's sleep and brief rest breaks during a busy day gives your spine the recovery time it needs. Pair this with any exercises your provider recommends; the PACBACK trial's biopsychosocial self-management approach deliberately paired education with graded activity, not inactivity alone. (1)

AFTER YOUR TREATMENT

Continue light movement rather than staying sedentary for long stretches. Follow any mobility or strengthening routine your provider outlines, since steady, directed exercise was a key part of the better outcomes seen in recent studies. Continue drinking water and avoid strenuous lifting or high-impact activity for the rest of the day so your spine can adjust to its improved alignment.
